MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS: This is America - Childish Gambino
The video 'This is America' from Donald Glover, an American Actor, singer, rapper, comedian etc. The video is hailed as a cultural phenomenon, causing both applaud and controversy throughout the media and social networks. The video is aimed to portray American society in it's current state with all the crimes going on in recent years: shootings, robberies, racism etc. Though through my interpretation it seems that the main problem it's focusing on is gun violence going on the United States of America.
The start of the video features a man sitting down with his guitar, and then why playing the camera pans around revealing Donald Glover (Childish Gambino). We are then introduced to very peculiar dancing, before he kills his first victim. One explanation and similarity is the old caricature 'Jim Crow' who used to be a depiction of black culture and the ethnic group as a whole. Jim Crow was often a character acted out by white people dressed up as black people, invoking racism. Th dance moves and facial expressions are similar to those presented by people who have played 'Jim Crow'. After shooting the person in the chair, someone comes along and carefully wraps the gun up whereas two people just frag the body of screen. This is representative of the news in modern media and how no one remembers the victims of all the attacks only the actual perpetrator and the weapon.
