Video Analysis: This is America

MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS: This is America - Childish Gambino  The video 'This is America' from Donald Glover, an American Actor, singer, rapper, comedian etc. The video is hailed as a cultural phenomenon, causing both applaud and controversy throughout the media and social networks. The video is aimed to portray American society in it's current state with all the crimes going on in recent years: shootings, robberies, racism etc. Though through my interpretation it seems that the main problem it's focusing on is gun violence going on the United States of America.  The start of the video features a man sitting down with his guitar, and then why playing the camera pans around revealing Donald Glover (Childish Gambino). We are then introduced to very peculiar dancing, before he kills his first victim. One explanation and similarity is the old caricature 'Jim Crow' who used to be a depiction of black culture and the ethnic group as a whole. Jim Crow was often a charac...

Compare and Contrast the two videos: Stop where you are & Titanium

Compare and Contrast the two videos: Stop where you are & Titanium   The video for Titanium contrasts with general conventions of Pop music videos, whereas they usually are centred around bragging about the rich, celebrity, lifestyle. This is evident because of the singer, Sia , who has apparently struggled with depression, drugs and alcohol showing, this shows in the lyrics and the general message of the song. This is comparable to Corrine Bailey’s ‘Stop where you are’ . This is because the song has a similar message and tone, it evident that the singer also, like ‘Sia’ has potentially had issues in the past as it reflects in both of their music. The message of Titanium is showcasing how people are perceived so quickly by society, we see a young boy who is obviously troubled/suffering and he is instantly targeted by the armed police showing how quick society is as a whole to target those in need. We see a similar situation portrayed in Stop where you are, where we can se...

Video analysis: Emeli Sande – Heaven

Video analysis: Emeli Sande – Heaven   The central theme for the song and the music video, is guilt and despair. The whole video is filmed in what appears to be the ‘bad sides’ of London. This gives the viewer the impression of poverty and despair. Another message from the lyrics and the video is that you shouldn’t judge someone just because of their situation/environment. For example, when the baby is stuck in the pram when it’s raining we feel sorry for it and maybe perhaps feel anger at the parents but we quickly see a womanly hand reach down to feed it, this reassures us that the baby is cared for but perhaps the family is struggling, it also implies to not judge something as soon as you see it. We see the repeating theme throughout the video.   The genre of the song is obviously pop/R&B; this is also supported by the pop style of music video. The bright colours and flashing lights of the camera flare/fades/cuts and lights are all conventional pop symbols. The ...
